Online prostitution group seized in Beijing

March 3rd, 2007 by kelvincho

Beijing - Police have clamped down on an online prostitution group, which is reportedly the biggest case in five years, according to the information released yesterday by the General Team of Social Security Management of the city’s public security bureau.

In total, 151 suspects were detained in a 300 police officer operation on Tuesday, which raided 18 of the group’s outlets almost simultaneously.

Among the 18 locations, 16 were reportedly established to provide prostitution services, one for online advertisement publishing and one a members living quarters.

Detectives also captured 42 mobiles phones and 62 computers during the operation, Beijing Times reported.

Among the 38 prostitutes, the youngest was only 15 years old, and is now in the protection of the police.

Twenty three suspects, who might be charged for organizing or assisting the group, were detained by police, while others including low-level members of the group, prostitutes and guests were punished with detentions ranging from 10 to 15 days.

The group is managed by five key leaders, and most of the group members are from Gong’an County, Hubei Province.

More than 30 members are suspected of posting prostitution advertisements on BBS or sending them via mobile phone text messages, according to Beijing police.

Each “special service” would cost a guest 300 yuan (US$38.46), 50 percent of which would be handed to the group’s leaders, the report said.

Each prostitute was reportedly ordered to serve guests services 10 days ago. The group even hired a Dong’an citizen as a physician to conduct medical check ups and deliver condoms.

Most of the guests detained are well-educated, the report said. Some of them said online prostitution services are much safer than finding them off the street.

Beijing police noticed the group last year while they were checking an online blog, which was filled with pornographic content and contact information for online prostitution services.

Detectives found clues about the group last December, and discovered an Internet Café where members of the group published online advertisements, the report said.
